Compostable Specifications for Foodservice Ware to Be Released

On September 30, the Sustainable Biomaterials Collaborative (SBC) and the Business-NGO Working Group will release the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Specifications for Compostable Biobased Food Service Ware—also known as “BioSpecs.” The BioSpecs, which have been under development for two years by a broad coalition of stakeholders, will be introduced to industry leaders at the Biopolymer Symposium 2009 in Chicago.

Seattle's New Food Packaging Requirements

The City of Seattle is requiring all food service businesses to find packaging alternatives to throw-away food service containers, cups and other products in all food service businesses - restaurants, grocery stores, delis, coffee shops and institutional cafeterias.

By July 1, 2010, all food service products designed for one-time-use must be replaced with one-time use products that are either compostable or recyclable.

A voluntary product certification and labeling program has been initiated by the USDA’s BioPreferred program to encourage the identification and use of bio-based products.

Congress's Styrofoam cups could cause cancer

A group of Democrats complain Styrofoam cups in the House cafeteria could contain carcinogens. 

In a letter to Speaker John Boehner (Ohio) and other Republican leaders, the nine Democrats say the Styrofoam cups and other dining materials could hold chemical components that could cause cancer. The Democrats are upset with the switch to Styrofoam from recyclable materials put into place when Democrats ran the House.

Bill to ban foam food containers advances in California

Restaurants and other businesses in California would have to stop using polystyrene foam food containers in the next five years under legislation approved Thursday by the state Senate to address environmental worries.

Sen. Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach) said the foam containers are often used for just minutes by fast-food customers but, because they do not decompose quickly, end up lingering for years in landfills, storm drains and ocean waters.
